Northland (Nouvelle Zélande) – Northland (New Zealand)

We pass by a garage to make repairs on the car, which cost me not less than $500. A big amount, I hope it will be paid off. Next step, there we are on the roads of the island, towards the north tip.

At midday we stop in a wood where stand the largest trees of New Zealand. For the biggest, the trunk is more than 13 meters of diameter, it is really huge.

Then we continue on the west coast road towards the north. We find a quiet place to sleep and have our first bath in the river with a beautiful sunset as a gift. We test kitchen equipment left by the former owner of the car. Then transform the car into a hotel room. Successful operation. It is not fancy but it is comfortable enough.

The next day we hit the road that is punctuted with beautiful landscapes. We often stop to enjoy the view and trudge along the coastal paths.

By mid afternoon, we arrive at the dune field, which is also the end of one of the longest beaches in the world, it is 90 miles long. We have a lot of fun to walk on the hot sand and hit the dunes. The view provides a great spectacle. Sculpted by the wind, the dunes appear like quiet long waves and there are some really interesting shapes if looking closer on the ground.

Then we hit the road to finally reach the northern tip at Cape Reinga. We witness a beautiful sunset.

We spend the night at the local campsite, expensive and very crowded. But having breakfast on the beach has no price ...

We then spend the day in the Golden Bays : We stop at a winery for a tasting. But I leave disappointed, tasting the wine was expensive and ultimately the products were not very good.

In the evening, we find a nice secluded bay where we'll have supper, spend the night over and have breakfast with direct access to the sea.

In the following day, we will pass by a cave where we discover for the first time some glow worms. There are a few other sites in New Zealand where it is possible to see them but they are expensive and busy places. We visited almost alone and find it quite interesting ...
