Here we are in Colombia and as I said in my latest article, I am finally in South America. We are in Cartagena of Indias, a city located on the Atlantic coast in the North East of Colombia. The temperature here is really high. The interesting part of the city isn't that wide. There is a old town quite cute, well restored, surrounded by city walls.

Sadly, we are there in the wrong time. The city is about to host the "Cumbre", annual event that gathers all presidents of each American continent country. And who says American continent says USA who do not drop things about security. That says that from the whole population of the city, a quarter is composed of policeman and soldiers.

Another quarter of it is sadly composed of prostitutes. I'm quite incredible and it's the first time in my life that I see so many girls hooking. Sam and I have found a cheap hotel... but full of prostitutes. We realised it only a few days after arriving but at the end of the day, it wasn't that bad as they were not "working" in the hotel. We even made friends with two of them, Nikole and Andrea who were in the room next door to ours. Nikole must be 16 and Andrea 18.
Nele, Alex et Max (the germans who were with us on the boat) are actually staying in the hostel next door, so we will spend another few days hanging out with them.

And by a pure chance, my friend Alessandro from Geneva (in a way, he is the person who inspired me for my travel) is passing by Cartagena as he is here to put his Van (with which he traveled over a year and half the WHOLE american continent with his girlfriend Céline who is good friend too) in a boat to send it back to Europe. It was great to see a familiar face, a friend, and on top of this, Aless gave me precious advices about my itinerary and about my reflections for my travel. We say goodbye because I really wish I had the chance to travel a little bit with them to see how it is to travel in a Van with long-time travelers...

Near the end of our stay, one morning around 4:00am, I hear cries in the hotel hall. Annoyed at the beginning but then worry, I get out of the room to check what's going on. The door of the girls room is open. I see Nikole on her bed crying. I try to ask her what's going on but she carries on to cry. I see blood on her bed. I enter to see what's going on and turns around to face me. Her face is bleeding. She explains me in cries and in Spanish (let's say I didn't catch anything that she was saying but it was rather obvious) that she got punched. I try to calm her down but she won't listen to me. I then call Andrea her friend, she tells me to put Nikole on the phone, but what she tells her pisses Nikole off, she smashes her phone against the wall and tells me that Andrea isn't such a good friend. I jump into our room quickly to explain Sam what's going on. When I get back in the girls room, I catch Nikole with a razor blade, she's trying to cut her wrists. I manage to catch the blade and throw it away in our room. Getting back in her room, I get tougher with her. I tell her to go to bed and to calm down, which she eventually does. I then clean her wounds, she's not good to see at that moment. Ma deduction is that she got in trouble with another prostitute for a client's matter. Nikole left a few hours after, and before that Andrea came back, but leaving me a message that she never expected that someone she doesn't know would take care of her like this. I was feeling bad seeing her facing such a violent and sick world. Talking about sick world, Cartegena was pretty bad. The experience of prostitution must be so traumatising. Sam and I discussed a lot about this, as we were talking to these girls who were kind of "normal" in the hotel but who were leaving in the evening "to go to work". One night out, we met the girls while they were hooking and I was literally shocked, REALLY shocked when I saw girls of 14 years old hooking with men of 40 or 50 years old. It was really sick and I want to vomit when I think about it.
Well, apart from these ugly stories, we still had some pleasure to visit the city. We were asked by some girls to take photos with them. It was funny.

The day before leaving, we went to the Volcano de lodo (mud volcano) about an hour away from Cartagena, in bus and then in moto-taxi.The volcano is a natural volcano that spits out mud and big bubbles of gas randomly. We stayed about an hour and half in the mud, playing like kids and floating amazingly on the surface...

Then we went to the lake nearby to get rinsed by old ladies. They were washing everything, but when I say everything, it really is everything, including ears and...

Anyway, we then tried to reach the hotel back by hitch-hiking but without success, even with a pretty girl and our European faces.

We finally got back by bus. After that, Andrea never stopped to tell us how much she did appreciate this time with us. But we wont' stay any longer, we're have planned to go to Medellin by hitch-hiking.
A little wink... a polo from Alsace found in a second hand clothe shop in a lost street...
