Banff (Canada) – Banff (Canada)

90 to 12/10/2011
After a freezing night in the tent (approx. -2°C), my carpooling friends have to leave me to carry on their way to Vancouver, while I am staying in Banff to discover the region. Caro and Françis drop me in Banff downtown. We say goodbye with big smile as it's been a great road trip as we spent 4 days together without any friction at all. I wish them good luck for their future plans. As soon as tehy left, I cross the road and get into the tourists center to get info about the hikes to be done in the area. There is juste one person in front of me, a guy that is apparently alone. I can hear him discussing with the ranger, who's explaining him that the road to the place where he wants to go closes tomorrow. The fella takes him map and leaves. I reach the same ranger and asks him about the place they were talking about. It's the Eiffel lake, located nearby Lake Louise (30 minutes driving away from Banff). I tells me it's quite worth it but a car is advised to go there. It's going to be pretty long to go there walking so I think I should ask the guy who was there if I could go with him. I ask the ranger to have a look at my bags while I try to run after the guy. I jump on the car park and manage to catch the guy in-extremis and ask him if he accepts to take me with him as I have no car. He agrees. Great ! I run to pick up my stuff in the tourism center and here we are on the road to Lake Louise. On our way, I get to know my new friend, Koen from the Netherlands. He's been recently the father of a 10 weeks old baby boy but is in Canada for a few days for a wedding.

Together, we will then do the hike that starts at the Moraine lake. Pretty nice for my first lake in the region, eh ? (I know, I'm getting local habits). But it's only the beginning.

The hike that we target is forbidden for groups less than 4 persons due to the bears hanging out in the area.

Bah, too bad, we'll go and if a bear attacks us, I have cereals bars in my poket and if not enough, I know a few Karate tricks. But we won't meet any bear but a couple of Spanish and a couple of americans instead. They are going towards a col at 2600m of altitude. We will join them for this ascenssion.

The Eiffel lake is finally rather small and not impressive but we'll finish the day with 15km (approx. 9 miles) of hiking in the company of snow and beautiful landscapes.

One last little loop to the nearby Consolation Lakes and we head back up to the car.

Upon our return in Banff, Koen being in the region for a while and having a car, he offers me to stay together to visit around, knowing that he has also planned to go to Jasper, about 250km North (approx 160km) and that is well known for its great places to visit too. I obviously accept his offer, even if we won't sleep at the same place. Koen will sleep at this hotel, while I prefer from far (because of the financial aspect) the luxurious comfort of my central heated tent... bah, spending the foloowing nights at -6°C down to -10°C was an interesting experience...
Anyway, inside Banff, we will visit the high standard hotel, the Fairmont Banff Spring Hotel, of which the price of one room is not less than 800$.

A bump at the Bow waterfalls...

... and we hit the road to reach the Jonston Cayon where we want to hike the Ink Pots Trail.

It's 8km (5 miles) one way (return is the same). The trails crosses though the canyon and passes by two great waterfalls. Nothing compared to the flow rate of those I have seen in Iceland but very beautiful. The pictures, even if they are nice, do not reflect the bright and shiny colors as we have been able to see them.

After the second waterfall, follows a winding trail that heads to a high plateau.

The landscape is quite unreal. This is where are located the Ink Pots. These are, in fact, pools fed by springs in their bottom. I let you discover the place we have admired through the pictures. Obviously, we stayed stuck there for quite a while in this magical place.
